My Brooklyn Wrestling Adventure

Outlaw Wrestling 9/28/23
In the ring - Ringside Joe (L), Manbun Jesus (M), Joe Clean (R)

For years, I've been deeply immersed in the world of professional wrestling, either as a performer or actively involved behind the scenes. The days of buying a ticket to watch a wrestling show as a regular fan had long become a distant memory, stretching back at least 15 years. However, last Thursday, something changed. An Instagram advertisement for an Outlaw Wrestling event, a promotion primarily based in Brooklyn and other parts of NYC, caught my eye on social media. Despite my longstanding ties to the business, I decided it was high time to be a paying fan once more.

The main incentive behind my decision was to show support for the indie wrestling scene, an essential breeding ground for future WWE and AEW stars. I wanted to be there, not as a wrestler or an organizer, but simply as a fan cheering for the talent I knew and admired. After all, it's crucial to back independent wrestling promotions just as fervently as we support giants like WWE or AEW.

As I arrived at the Brooklyn Monarch, located at 23 Meadow Street, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of excitement mixed with uncertainty. I'd known about Outlaw Wrestling, having heard stories from fellow wrestlers who had provided ring rentals for the promotion. Still, I hadn't experienced an Outlaw Wrestling show firsthand.

One of my first encounters outside the venue was with a familiar face: pro wrestler Kenny Bengal. We'd locked up in the ring numerous times, and it was great to see him again. He was part of the evening's lineup, teaming with Bulldog Pittman in a tag team match. A few years back, I remembered when Bulldog was a newcomer to the ring, and we had one of my favorite matches in 2021. Kenny and I exchanged greetings, and he headed inside to prepare for the show.

Before leaving for the event, I attempted to envision the venue layout, ensuring I could make the most of my evening. Admittedly, I was prepared to pay a premium, as the tickets were priced at $50 at the door. While this might seem steep, my perspective was clear: I'd willingly pay more to see a WWE or AEW show, so why not support the Indies how people bought tickets to see me? Plus, I knew a handful of people on the show and figured my experience could make for a good IPWW Newsletter article, so why not?

Upon arrival, something unexpected occurred – an overly enthusiastic security check. I humorously suggested to the security personnel that if they were going to get that handsy, they should take me out for a steak dinner first. We shared a laugh, and I made my way inside.

The next order of business was fulfilling my desire for the full fan experience, including grabbing a bite to eat. My journey led me to the venue's food stand, where I ordered the finest cheeseburger and fries that $15 could buy. Whatever culinary magic the cook wielded in that moment was nothing short of impressive.

Now, for the setup. The Brooklyn Monarch is not your typical wrestling venue; it's primarily a concert hall and a club/bar. The wrestling ring was strategically positioned in front of a stage with a massive screen serving as the backdrop for the show and wrestler entrances. However, there were no traditional seats; it was all standing room only – a nostalgic throwback to the days when I attended indie wrestling shows in Florida in the mid 2000s.

As I soaked in the unique atmosphere, I encountered another familiar face – none other than Crowbar. While Crowbar is undoubtedly an indie wrestling legend, he's also known for his past work in WCW, but known recently for being 49 years old and wrestling like he’s half of that - maybe he has a good physical therapist 😉 . He was hanging out and greeting other wrestlers prior to his match later that night. I had wrestled him once years ago, and he used to frequent my training school. Reuniting with Crowbar was a welcome surprise.

As the show finally commenced, it kicked off with a four-way match featuring Beautiful Buddy Tomas, Drew Marston, Tamid Tamir Gibbs, and a fourth wrestler whose name temporarily escapes me. The match served as an excellent opener, setting the stage for the action-packed evening ahead. Notably, the event was broadcast live on the Premier Streaming Network, an online PPV service.

The night unfolded with a tag team tournament, and Kenny Bengal and Bulldog Pittman progressed to the finals against The Audacity. My allegiance shifted between bouts – earlier in the evening, I rooted for The Audacity as they played the heel characters, but now, I was cheering on Bulldog and Kenny, collectively known as the Silk City Kings. Ultimately, The Audacity clinched the victory, becoming the inaugural Outlaw Wrestling Tag Champions.

One standout tag team match featured Bull James and Homicide facing off against Jacob Fatu and Lance Ano'i, who stepped in for Afa Jr. due to his father's hospitalization. The match showcased the incredible skills and high-level performances that all four wrestlers have consistently delivered throughout their careers. It was an exciting, well-structured encounter with unexpected twists and turns.

All in all, my $50 investment was well worth the price of admission. I would gladly do it again, but next time, I'd opt to purchase tickets in advance to save some money – because I am a little frugal cheap, after all. The night was a testament to the vibrant indie wrestling scene, and I encourage fellow fans to support promotions like Outlaw Wrestling near you whenever the opportunity arises.

Can Reggie Collins Avoid the Golden Touch?

by Bankie Bruce

David Goldy has been setting AXW on fire in 2023. Leading "The Golden Era," he's turned his offbeat antics into major victories, including a standout performance at BATTLEFIELD X, where he pinned Tough Guy Inc and the notorious HOMICIDE in a trios match on September 16.

But the cocky and arrogant Goldy is gearing up for a crucial showdown at AXW Hamburg Havoc on October 14 at the Historic Hamburg Field House in Hamburg, PA. His opponent? The spirited up-and-comer from Maryland, Reggie Collins!

Collins made a lasting impression back in April at HONOR: Autism Awareness with his unorthodox style that quickly won over the Hamburg fans. He solidified his presence with a breathtaking flying crossbody off the top rope, reminiscent of Ricky Steamboat.

During the BATTLEFIELD X rumble on 9/16, Collins proved his mettle by lasting nearly till the end, earning respect from the Hamburg faithful.

Having asked AXW management for more opportunities to make his mark, Collins's wish was granted, leading to this October 14 match against Goldy.

While Collins is up for the challenge, there's one formidable obstacle: THE GOLDEN TOUCH. Goldy has been capitalizing on situations throughout 2023, using brass knuckles to flatten his foes. Despite video and photo evidence, Goldy vehemently denies it, insisting he has a natural knockout punch.

Will Goldy's controversial tactics secure another victory at Hamburg Havoc? Or will Reggie Collins pull off a stunning upset on this grand stage? This match promises to be a hidden gem of the evening. #BANKONIT

Watching Wrestlers on Netflix

As a pro wrestling fan, I recently decided to dive into Netflix's new series, "Wrestlers." Given its connection to the world of independent pro wrestling, I felt compelled to share my thoughts. The show centers around Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), situated in Louisville, Kentucky, which holds a unique place in wrestling history. OVW served as the training ground for the last generation of WWE stars, including iconic names like John Cena and Randy Orton.

Before we delve into the show, please be aware that there may be some spoilers ahead, so proceed with caution or watch and comeback to this article. Here are my impressions of Episode 1, titled "Ohio Valley Wrestling."

One aspect that immediately struck me about the episode is its subtle start. There's no dramatic music or flashy intros; it simply eases viewers into the world of OVW. We're introduced to a female wrestler as she walks in, exchanging greetings with her colleagues and preparing for the upcoming show.

The episode cuts to various wrestlers entering the OVW Gym, including the amusing sight of Jesse Godderz aka Mr. Pectacular (also a Team 3D Academy Attendee), formerly of Impact Wrestling, gliding in on a Segway. One character introduced is Cash Flow, a pro wrestler. However, it's a bit frustrating that we don't immediately see the names of these wrestlers. While we hear them sharing their thoughts with the camera, their identities remain a mystery initially.

As fans start filling into the OVW Gym, we catch a glimpse of the venue's impressive scale. It's a reminder that thanks to shows like "Wrestlers" and "Monster Factory" on AppleTV+, independent wrestlers now have opportunities to shine on mainstream platforms.

Following this, we're treated to a concise history lesson in pro wrestling by David Shoemaker, a pro wrestling journalist. This mini breakdown and historical context make "Wrestlers" accessible even to those unfamiliar with the world of pro wrestling. The episode proceeds to explore OVW's rich history, highlighting its role as a precursor to WWE's NXT.

One notable scene shows Doug Basham calling a spot in the ring, revealing a behind-the-scenes aspect of wrestling. While I initially had reservations about such revelations, it's a testament to how wrestling has evolved. It demystifies the magic while emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the industry. Al Snow's (one of the three owners of OVW and wrestling legend) reaction when he mentions his real name underscores the significance of maintaining the wrestling persona and kayfabe.

So far, "Wrestlers" effectively serves as an advertisement for OVW, providing a well-rounded introduction to its legacy and significance in wrestling.

Al Snow takes a moment to explain wrestling terminology, differentiating between "heel" and "face." This clear exposition caters to non-wrestling fans, making the show inclusive and engaging. The episode excels in establishing personal connections between OVW the company and its wrestlers, drawing viewers into the characters' journeys.

We're introduced to one of the owners of OVW, distinct from Al Snow, who provocatively labels wrestling fans as "Wrestling Dorks" – a classic heel move.

The season's focal point appears to be OVW's journey to a big show on August 27 (prior to the airing of the show) and its financial challenges. The owners, not including Al Snow, contemplate leaving if OVW doesn't turn a profit. This intriguing narrative twist sets the stage for potential conflict and drama in the episodes to come.

Throughout the episode, there's a recurring theme of pro wrestling serving as an escape for the wrestlers. This resonates with me personally, as wrestling often offers solace during challenging times. Episode one excels in character development, setting the stage for potential setbacks later in the season.

One memorable scene takes us backstage during an OVW show, where the stress and chaos of wrestling production become apparent. Having booked shows myself, I can attest to the pressure involved. The backstage monitor malfunctions repeatedly, adding to the tension as they scramble to fix it during the live event.

In conclusion, the first episode of "Wrestlers" left me thoroughly engaged and eager for more. It offers a well-crafted narrative that caters to both wrestling enthusiasts and newcomers. Whether you're well-versed in wrestling lore or simply curious about the world of independent pro wrestling, "Wrestlers" on Netflix promises an enjoyable ride. Stay tuned for our review of episode two, titled "Cheap Heat," as we continue to explore OVW's journey and its quest for financial success amidst the looming threat of ownership withdrawal.
